Mold Type
Double Injection Molding — 2K / Two-Shot Molding
Double shot injection molding, also called 2K injection molding or two-shot injection molding, is the process of molding two or more different plastic materials into one part at one time.
What Is It
One part, two materials.
A key part of double shot injection molding is that the two materials must be compatible with each other and designed to overmold — otherwise the product won't hold up during production. Overmolding is sometimes treated as a single type of 2K injection molding, but many overmolding materials aren't suitable for the two-shot process, since one material may need a very different cycle time than the other. Material compatibility is the deciding factor.
The process lets you produce a single part with different regional plastic materials, or mold a single part with multiple independent colors. Applications range from simple household items like power tools to everyday products like toothbrushes.
We run parallel 2K injection molding machines and 90-degree double injection molding machines — covering both double injection molding and overmolding parts.
Process Types
Types of Double Injection Molding
01
Sequential Injection Molding
One material is injected into the mold first, then the second material is injected into it once it has partially solidified. Well suited to products that need different colors or textures.
02
Co-Injection Molding
Two materials are injected simultaneously through different nozzles and meet in the mold cavity, bonding together into one part — used for parts with a core and an outer layer, like a bottle with a soft grip over a rigid base.
03
Sandwich Molding
Two materials are injected into the same cavity but separated by a third "core" material — used for parts with a foam or honeycomb core, such as lightweight composite panels for aerospace.
04
Overmolding
One material is molded directly over another — like a rubber grip over a plastic handle — to create a soft-touch feel or add functionality such as an anti-slip surface.
